Been hesitating to apply for our Economic Progress Instigator AmeriCorps VISTA position?
Don’t delay any longer. This is the last call for applications. We’re already busy contacting references for our top choices and hope to make a decision before mid-May.
More information on this position is available here. This position is hosted in partnership with United Way of Southeastern Utah...
Tornado Update: Help Hale →
Our friends at HERO in Hale County, Alabama, are busy assessing the damage to rural southwest Alabama, and setting up a shelter for what is already 20 people in need of a place to stay. I’m told there will be a list up soon of specifics needed for the families, but for now, if you are able, you can donate money that’ll be used for emergency relief by clicking the donate button on their...
Tornadoes
We can’t find an appropriate photo or video, or really any information at this point in the assessment regarding the tornadoes in Alabama from yesterday. But we’re certainly thinking of Alabama and keeping informed. We know Tuscaloosa is a mess, along with our friends in Hale County. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Personally, our families are reporting no damage at this...

Introduction
The Rocky Mountain West, I believe it has been said if in paraphrase, is a state of mind. I may have said so myself, drawing on some declaration dimly remembered.
In any case the statement is wrong. My West, as I call it out of an equation of affection with ownership, induces a state of mind.
The inducement is space. Even from burgeoning cities like Denver and Salt Lake, not to mention other and...
Rain In Green River, Utah
It’s a rare occasion, we promise, but it happened this past week twice. Ahhhh Springtime!
Building a house in a month for $10,000 in... →
Many of you are probably already in tune with this but just in case here’s the current Rural Studio 20k House blog. We’re jealous of how fast it is seeming to build this house. Day 11 and all the framing and sheathing is done.
More info on Rural Studio. More info on the 20k Project.
The Epicenter’s 70k House.
Why Green River?
In this rural town, a microcosm of so many other places, the Epicenter has the opportunity to engage, collaborate with, and learn from a community to re-establish this place for its residents.
(from the Epicenter pinwheels, Brett Randall and Kelsey Jones)
2 amazing things
1. We just heard thunder. One thunder. This is amazing because it’s the first time in…. well, we don’t even know in how long because it was so long ago.
2. We just found out about Google Alerts. We can blame it on our isolation that we didn’t know before. This is amazing because it just is. (So now be careful what rumors you’re spreading; we’ll know.)
This AmeriCorps VISTA position is still available →
Although our VISTA through Habitat we applied for isn’t happening this year, we still do have the position available that we’ve been incessantly promoting. Apply here. This position is not in danger of disappearing. We hope there was no confusion.
Applications are being accepted through May 31st, although you should apply by May 6, because we plan on making the decision before the...
Just heard from Habitat for Humanity International that our application for an AmeriCorps VISTA for our affiliate was denied.
The amount of 2011-2012 VISTA positions is 410, down 90 (18%) from last year due to a $23 million federal funding cut to AmeriCorps VISTA. Ours was one of 167 applications, 1 out of 689 positions requested.
It’s disheartening to feel the real effects of the popular...
100 years of down home, running through my blood. →
(click title link above for song)
Replace the lyrics “clear creeks” with “silt-laden river” and “in my momma’s kitchen” with “in Hayley’s kitchen” and it pretty much describes Green River too. And if you can’t get enough, here’s another (this time replace “cotton” with “melons”).
It’s warm and...
We’re tired of hearing the conductors on Amtrak comment that Green River is a ghost town. We want passengers to see some indication that Green River is growing and has a lot to offer.
As part of a grant from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, the Epicenter is receiving some much needed signage. This hand-painted sign (designed by Zoe Minikes when she was here in January)...
BRUTE LABS blog →
Remember our post about a then-upcoming phone conference with someone from BRUTE LABS?
Well, that valuable and insightful conversation has extended even until today with Chris Lezama, Contributor to BRUTE. And he recently wrote this blog post (So Much to (G)Love: An Account of How A Design Changed My Life) about the Milwaukee Brewers logo.
Don’t you remember the first time you realized the...

"AmeriCorps survives" →
A sigh of relief. (Link to article here)
AmeriCorps has avoided termination. (What about the rest of the CNCS? We don’t know yet…) Over 4000 calls were made to US Senators to plead the case for AmeriCorps. Thank you to all those who joined with us in contacting our state Senators.
This is great news for our current position of an AmeriCorps VISTA (apply here!), for our potential new...

The death of architecture... →
Unless you’re a ‘starchitect’, chances are you’ll end up creating mediocre glass-clad hangars, says Jay Merrick. Does the problem lie with the profession, or the politicians in charge of our towns and cities?
We recognize that architecture is undervalued, but we think the main problem lies in for whom architects choose to work. Architects only work for the top 10% (or...
