blog comments powered by DisqusThe Role in Rural
Last spring I took the California Zephyr from Chicago to Utah to visit allies in Green River. Jack, Maria, and an extended, revolving crew operate the Epicenter, a housing resource center, business resource center, and creative studio instigating economic progress and creating decent shelter in Green River, a 953 person town in the desert of SE Utah.
The work the Epicenter crew has been engaged in for the past three years is a direct example of the new role designers can/should/are shaping for themselves. Young Professionals (YP™) at Epicenter are formally trained in the design disciplines of architecture, graphic design and industrial design, yet their job roles extend far beyond what is typically offered in a traditional professional workplace.
Epicenter maintains a very engaging blog that provides an open and honest look into their daily operations. They are also presently accepting applications for Frontier Fellowships.
Friends: You have poured the foundation and are constructing the framework (one nail at a time) for a new model of design practice. Live. 24 hours a day. Keep it up.
