We’re starting a Bike-Share: Epicycles. Grants, sponsorships, and partnerships are in the works.
epicycle, n.: A small circle, having its centre on the circumference of a greater circle.
The Epicycles Community Bike Share brings together emerging adult professionals and other adult volunteers to mentor under-served youth and teenagers in Green River, Utah (population 971) as they develop and operate an invaluable health and transportation resource for the town’s residents and visitors. Epicenter community volunteers acquire and maintain bicycles for hourly, daily, and weekly use. This project improves the health and well-being of the residents of Green River, enables visitors who arrive by train at Amtrak’s California Zephyr stop in downtown to explore the city and its surrounding attractions by affordable and fun means, enables residents to rent bikes for traveling on Amtrak, and improves environmental quality for all. Epicycles provides mentorship and training for teenagers in the specific skills of bicycle maintenance, repair, and building. The youth of Green River are challenged by a lack of activities, but bicycling is one integral, everyday activity for most. Epicycles is located in the center of the town, on Broadway, in an area that is undergoing a revitalization as historically important buildings are refurbished and redesigned to create a vibrant and attractive hub for the community. The building that houses Epicycles is the first one that a passenger alighting from the train in Green River will see.
Goals:
Mentorship: To mentor under-served youth and teenage volunteers in the development of a community resource
Health: To increase visibility and awareness of healthy forms of “active transportation.”
Transportation Choices: To increase transportation options for residents of and visitors to Green River.
Objectives:
Volunteer Collaboration: To employ and work with fifteen to twenty young people in the design and maintenance of EPICYCLES. To draw upon the talents and efforts of thirty to fifty adult community members in the planning and implementation of the project.
Active Transportation Improvements: To increase the ‘mode share’ of bicycles for short (0-2 mi) trips in Green River (other modes include walking and driving).
Economic Development: To instigate and foster economic development in the city’s important tourism sector by publicizing and leading bicycle tours of Green River using the equipment of Epicycles, adding value to such annual festivals as Melon Days (September) and Project Green River (June).
