Epicenter’s Antipode, a site-specific billboard installation, will be officially unveiled at Project Green River on September 17, 2011. (That’s this Friday). It will be on display and open to the public 24 hours a day until October 21, 2011. Visible from Main Street heading west out of downtown Green River, the artwork is a visual depiction of the Epicenter’s antipode.

An antipode is the diametric opposite of any given point on a sphere. Imagine drawing a perfectly straight line through the center of the Earth starting at the Epicenter’s office at 180 South Broadway. Where would your line come out? The Indian Ocean — almost exactly between Australia and the Southern tip of Africa. Using the longitude and latitude coordinates of this antipodal point, a satellite photograph was acquired from NASA’s online image database. This photograph is displayed on the billboard.

The project is supported in part by the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, with funding from the State of Utah and the National Endowment for the Arts. Billboard image courtesy of the Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center: Mission STS61A, Roll 31, Frame 68.

Sometimes the best way to understand the place you are in is to first consider its opposite.

Kickstarter: Project Green River

Get excited because we’re launching a Kickstarter project tonight! The project will be our big fundraiser for the year, and we’re hoping to raise $7,000 during the month of July to pay for this year’s Project Green River. The 2nd Annual Project Green River is to be held in conjunction with Melon Days, and will take place on September 17th. When you give money on Kickstarter you receive rewards. For our project you can get admission to this year’s festival, an official PGR poster or t-shirt, dinner for two at the Tamarisk (a locally owned restaurant situated right on the Green River), a night at the Green River Holiday Inn Express, and maybe even a rafting trip! We’re hammering out the final details today and launching at midnight EST.

One of the many project’s the EPIcrew is working on is a festival for June 4+5, 2010 known as Project Green River. You may be wondering, “But, I thought you guys were designers and/or architects or something? Why organize an event?” Well, we have chosen to take on an event (in addition to renovating Baxter) based on other demands of the town. Working closely with the Green River Chamber of Commerce, we quickly realized there needs to be a events outside of Melon Days. The town wants more activity and tourism… reasons to celebrate life in Green River. So, this is our answer! Project Green River is a music, art, and film festival run by local volunteers (The Chamber of Commerce, Americorps VISTA’s, local City Council members, and enthusiastic residents) to raise money for affordable housing. Green River, Utah suffers from generational poverty, substandard living conditions, and lacks affordable housing options. The festival will unite the community and allow them to gain ownership of their future, increase awareness, and stimulate the struggling economy.
